Become an RBT

Become an RBT — Step-by-Step Guide

Plain-language walkthrough of the RBT credential path — eligibility, training, competency assessment, application, exam, supervision, and renewal.

Draft — BCBA review pending

This guide explains the RBT credential path in plain language. It paraphrases BACB requirements — it does not replace them. The BACB handbook and your BACB account are always authoritative.

Who this guide is for

  • People considering RBT certification
  • New hires mapping their first 90 days
  • Supervisors explaining the path to trainees
  • Parents who want to understand what "RBT" means on a care team

Behavioral science in service of the child starts with clarity about credentials, scope, and oversight.

A note on authority

Every chapter in this guide includes a disclaimer: verify against the current BACB RBT Handbook. State laws, employer policies, and funders may add requirements beyond what the BACB sets.

Seven steps

The path at a glance

  1. Understand the credential

Learn what an RBT is, what the BACB does, and whether this path fits your goals.

  2. Confirm eligibility

Check age, education, background screening, and timing rules before you pay fees.

  3. Complete 40-hour training

Finish BACB-aligned training over at least 5 days and no more than 180 days.

  4. Pass the Initial Competency Assessment

Demonstrate 19 entry-level tasks with a qualified, independent assessor.

  5. Apply and take the exam

Create your BACB account, upload documents, get approved, and pass the Pearson VUE exam.

  6. Activate with ongoing supervision

After you pass, your supervisor adds you as a supervisee. Practice only with required supervision.

  7. Maintain your certification

Recertify on schedule, meet ethics duties, and use inactive status if you stop practicing.
